Microchip

Updated: Jan 14, 2021

Do you know your pet's microchip number?

Have you reviewed the chip's registration information in the past 12 months?

If you can answer YES to both of these questions, then you are a PAWESOME pet parent! Everyone else, please read on to help make sure your pet can find you if they get lost.

STEP 1 - Microchip# - Find your pet's microchip number (from adoption paperwork, vet records, etc.) If can't find a record of your pet's chip#, take them to your vet and get them scanned. Make sure they are using a universal scanner as there are a few different frequencies the chip could be set to.

STEP 2 - Microchip# Registration Lookup - Using the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Search determine if and/or where your pet's chip is registered. Enter your pet's microchip# and review the results returned. In the image shown here, I entered one of my pet's chip# and it returned that it was registered in 2 places which is accurate.

Background - In 2009 I had originally registered my pets with Petlink as they offered one-time fee of $19.99 for a lifetime of registry.

Found Animals Registry registration was started in 2011 and is a completely FREE microchip registry. I have additionally registered with this FREE registry.

STEP 3 - Microchip# Registration Review / Update - it is critical that you review your pet's registration information on an annual basis so that they can find you if they get lost. Has your phone # changed? Have you moved? Have you switched to a different vet?

  • STEP 3a (if your pet's chip is showing as registered in STEP 2 above) - signon to the site where your pet's chip is registered. If you can't check and/or update this information without paying any fees, STOP HERE and move on to STEP 3b.

  • STEP 3b - Highly recommend to register the microchip with the FREE service provided by *Found Animals Registry

STEP 4 - Review AAHA Universal Search to see your updated registration sites & dates Using the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Search to make sure the dates are current and that each site is listed. Enter your pet's microchip# and review the results returned. It may take a few hours to overnight before brand new registrations appear.
